Broomball Basketball Rules
THE GAME
1. The game begins with a center face off. Defense must be on their own end of the ice.

2. There will be two 20-minute periods with a 5-minute break between periods. If the score is tied at then end of the second period, a 5 minute sudden death overtime period will be played.

SUBSTITUTIONS
1. Teams may freely substitute at any time the ball is dead (out of bounds or after a goal) and when the ball is in play if the entering player comes on when and where the existing player comes off the ice.

2. Of the six players on the ice for each team, there must be at least two girls and two boys from each team at all times, unless previously agreed upon by both managers and official.

SCORING
1. A goal is worth one point

2. The ball must completely cross the goal line and not be hit in from higher than three feet off the ice.

PENALTIES

FORFEITURE OF THE BALL: Opposing team takes the ball at the point the infraction took place.

1. Illegal substitution (see subbing rules above).

2. Hitting the ball out of bounds – last player to touch the ball determines who the infraction is on.

3. Playing the ball with the broom between the waist and shoulder is a turnover, and with the broom above the shoulder is a turnover, and with the broom above the shoulder is a penalty.

4. Catching, throwing, batting, kicking, carrying, or trapping the ball. The ball can be knocked down to yourself with any part of the body, but not to a teammate.

5. Goalkeeper throwing the ball forward.

6. Offside. The ball must enter the opponent’s zone (blue line) before any of the attackers. Whistle is blown when the ball is touched by an attacker.

7. Only the goalkeeper can be in the crease unless:

A. If the ball is in the crease, players can hit the ball into the net from inside the crease.

B. If the goalie leaves the crease, one defender can be in the crease. When the ball is out of the crease, no other player can be in the crease for more than three seconds.

8. Goalkeeper can use his hands, but not advance the ball.

9. Feet maybe used to block, but not to advance the ball.

10. A team cannot score from a direct pass from out of bounds. It must be touched by either an offensive or defensive player before it goes into the goal.

11. Whenever a team is given the ball on a turnover, both teams must be on their own respective sides of the ball and the ball must be put into play by hitting the ball backwards to another player.

TWO MINUTE PENALTIES: No substitution for player who must leave the ice, offending team must play one player short, either a guy or girl depending on who the infraction is on.

1. Throwing their broom.

2. High sticking above the shoulder

3. Holding another player on their broom.

4. Leaving feet (diving) at an opponent.

5. Flagrant interference.

6. Pushing, charging, roughing, elbowing, tripping, slashing, jabbing with the end of the broom.

7. During overtime periods only: Defending player in crease for more than 3 seconds.

8. For two-minute penalties a penalty shot will be awarded if flagrant.

FOUR-MINUTE PENALTIES: No substitution for offender, team plays short for 4 minutes. A penalty shot is awarded to the opposing team.

1. Injury or potential injury situation resulting from high sticking or other action out of the legal limits of broomball play.

2. Illegal action used to stop a goal.

EJECTION FROM A GAME

1. A player will be ejected from a game if involved in fighting, swearing, or any type of violent action as decided by the referee.
A. Penalty shot is awarded to opposing team.
B. Team will play short for 4 minutes (major penalty) before subbing.
C. Players are ineligible to play the next scheduled game.

PENALTY SHOTS

A penalty shot is a free shot at the goalkeeper from 20 feet. The shooter may stand stationary or run up to the ball to hit it. The rebound is dead and cannot be played by either team. The person who was in the goal at the time of the infraction must shoot the penalty shot. NO SUBSTITUTIONS. If no goal is scored the ball is given to the team that shot at the centerline.

OVERTIME
If the score is tied at the end of regulation play, there will be a five-minute overtime played using two girls and one guy for each team and no goalkeeper. Overtime periods are sudden death (game is over when a goal is scored). The rules for regulation time apply with the exception that it is a two-minute penalty to have a defender in the crease for more than three seconds. If no goals are scored in the first overtime then the teams switch ends and play another five-minute overtime period with three minutes to rest between periods. If no goals are scored after the second overtime period the game will be decided by a shoot-off. Two guys and two girls from each tema alternate taking shots at an empty net from center ice. This is to be continued until one team outscores the other. The game will be recorded as a loss by one goal.
