Eagles pick up 3-0 win at Hamline

ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College picked up its second victory of the season on Wednesday evening, defeating Hamline University 3-0 in the Hutton Arena. The Eagles used a balance attack of both offense and defense to take a three-set sweep of the Pipers.

Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) had one of her best games as an Eagle after shifting to playing all six positions on the court after playing libero for the first two and a half years of her career. The senior had 11 kills on 25 attempts to go with 10 digs. Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was Northwestern’s top hitter in terms of total kills as she tallied 12 on the night. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) followed with 11 kills of her own while recording two service aces.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) quarterbacked the Eagles throughout the match with 42 assists in NWC’s 5-1 offense.

As a team, the Eagles hit .140 compared to Hamline’s mark of .115. The Eagles’ amassed six blocks over the three sets, three of which came off the hands of both Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) and Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar). Kelsey Korporal had a team-high 15 digs in the match, while three other Eagles had 10 or more digs.

Sam Greeney-Hamlin had a team-best nine kills for the Pipers, who didn’t have any players record double-digit kills. Sammy Redman had 24 assists for Hamline and Heidi Larsen had 19 digs.

Northwestern improves to 2-4 on the season with a weekend tournament at Augsburg College coming up. The Eagles will play the University of St. Thomas and Central College on Friday, Sept. 10 at 4 and 8 p.m., followed by two more matches on Saturday, Sept. 11. Hamline falls to 2-3 in 2010 following the loss.
