Clayton Johnson goes low at North Central Invitational

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. -- Northwestern’s Clayton Johnson (Anoka, Minn./PACT Charter) won medalist honors at the North Central University Invitational on Friday, shooting a three-over par 75 on an ugly weather day at Mississippi Dunes Golf Club. Johnson bested the field of 25 golfers on the day, fending off North Central’s Ty Liljander and Taylor Murphy, both of whom fired a four-over 76. As a team, Northwestern finished with a 346, which was good for a tie for third place.
Following Johnson’s lead for the Eagles was newcomer Daniel Horner (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian), who tied for sixth place overall with an 82. Jordan Prins carded a 90 for NWC, followed by Tyler Melton, who rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with a 99.
North Central won the team competition, shooting a 24-over par 312. The University of Minnesota-Morris followed with a team score of 345. Martin Luther tied Northwestern for third with a 346.
The Eagle squad is back in action on back-to-back days next week, playing in the Bethany Lutheran Invitational at Waseca Lakeside Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 10 before hosting the UMAC Regular Season Invitational at Gross National Golf Club in Minneapolis on Saturday, Sept. 11.
